The Striped Raphael Catfish, also known as the Chocolate Talking Catfish (Platydoras armatulus), is a fascinating armored catfish native to the rivers and streams of South America, particularly in the Amazon and Orinoco basins.
First described in the 1800s, this species gets its nickname "Talking Catfish" from the audible grunting or clicking sounds it makes using its pectoral fins—especially when stressed or handled. Its dark brown body with creamy white stripes gives it a striking appearance that stands out in any aquarium.
These nocturnal catfish are hardy, and ideal for aquariums with hiding spots such as driftwood & caves. They can grow up to 20–25 cm.
Carnivorous by nature, they thrive on a varied diet of sinking pellets, bloodworms, brine shrimp, and other protein-rich foods. Regular water changes and good filtration are key to maintaining their health.
