The Otocinclus Catfish (Otocinclus spp.), often called "Oto Cat," is a small, peaceful freshwater fish native to South America, particularly the streams and tributaries of the Amazon and La Plata river basins. First scientifically described in the mid-1800s, Otos are beloved for their algae-eating abilities and gentle nature.
These fish feed primarily on biofilm and soft algae in the wild. In aquariums, they thrive on algae, supplemented with blanched vegetables (like zucchini or spinach) and algae wafers. Growing only 1–2 inches long, they’re perfect for planted community tanks.
Otos require clean, well-oxygenated water, stable parameters, and should be kept in groups of at least 4–6 to reduce stress. Though delicate at first, with proper acclimation and care, one can have great success with them.
